City Gent Jackets

These jacket designs were inspired by the boy that I saw on the platform in Kings Cross Underground Station. The shape, style and colour of this jacket feels like that of a typical City Gent, because of its associations with being smartly dressed, professional and business-like. It is the kind of jacket that my dad wears to work in Holborn for PR firm.

I was inspired by the way the boy in my photo from the train platform wore it with trainers to deliberately create a strong juxtaposition between two very different kinds of urban wear; classic, sophisticated city clothing, and contemporary urban street wear. I wanted to recreate a similar juxtaposition, so I decided to combine the streetwear classic of a slogan or branded t-shirt, with the basic structure of a businessman's city coat.

My first design was a long, grey, tailored coat with the words 'City Gent' emblazoned across it .  I chose to use bold white font as I wanted it to compliment the simple, minimalistic style of the coat yet still stand out. I thought it would be a good idea, considering the theme of my project is how people communicate their identity through visual codes in clothing, to write the literal meaning of the type of person I thought this coat symbolised across it.

I then felt that writing 'City Gent' was actually too literal, so changed it to 'The City', relating to the place that this coat is associated with, rather than the type of person. Finally, I shortened it to just "City' as I thought it was much aesthetically cleaner and more of a subtle, wearable statement.
