I developed this very minimal, high neck body-con dress design structure using detail inspiration from my images of boys in tracksuits from my research.I decided to turn tracksuits into dress designs because I thought it would be interesting to transform a stereotypically masculine and aggressive piece of clothing into something feminine.
I experimented using different details which are symbolic of different types of sportswear. The two plain dresses on the side (the left one has pocket detailing) are an experiment of the basic dress structure. The stripes running down the middle are inspired by the classic and widely recognised Adidas detailing, which to me symbolises working class youth culture. The white panelling is meant to symbolise a more high-tech athletic kind of sportswear. I experimented with combining the two details to create a contrast.
I feel like these designs are too simple and closed ended to develop very further, however I am defiantly going to use this dress shape as a basic structure for future designs. I really like this dress structure as I feel it is extremely representative of my identity and personal style, as I often favour sportswear, clothing with zippers and 90's inspired high necklines. Even the type of zips I have chosen to use represents my own person style, as I have taken the rounded fastener detail from my favourite pair of shoes. I also like how it has a slightly trashy early 2000's feel, which contrasts with the overall quite sophisticated feel of the dress.
